The Cross Country Ski Headquarters won the Michigan Cup for the third year in a row - their fourth win since 2004. In a surprise to many, Traverse City Nordic took the Brumbaugh Cup for the most powerful team on the 2009 Michigan Cup circuit.
Here are photos from the first couple of kilometers of the first, classic, leg of the Michigan Cup Relays at the Cross Country Ski Headquarters, the last Michigan Cup race (and party) of the season.
Just as the once great horse handicapper predicted the favorite is leading the race down the backstretch but the race is far from over. Will HH/CCSS have enough in the tank to pull out a victory?

The new team scoring strategy was trialed this year with the idea of adding race performance to team participation to establish team winners. Feedback forms available at the relays will provide you a chance to provide your assessment.
The 2009 U.S. Masters XC Ski Team was named by the AXCS. Natalie Dawson of Team NordicSkiRacer.com was named to the women's team.
Cross Country Ski Headquarters posted their first team win of the season at the Boyne Classic by winning the men >= 50, and the womens' divisions, and placing third for the men < 50 division. HH/CCSS wins overall title.
Saturday's Boyne Highland's 5 Km and 10 Km classic race had a semi-soft track that made it relatively easy to negotiate the many downhills on the course., , , , , ,
Temperatures stayed at or below freezing for Sunday's Boyne Highlands 5 Km / 15 Km Freestyle race. The course was tilled several times to provide an non-icy surface. The course was extremely fast but "edgeable."
UPDATED: The Michigan Cup Team Standings remain very close, with three teams having a chance to win the Michigan Cup this year.
The 36th edition of the North American Birkebeiner was a Classic in many ways. After several years of marginal weather conditions the last two Birkie’s have been cold powder versions, easy to wax for and easy to prepare the course.
