The new date for the WinterSonnenwende fits nicely with the Michigan Cup schedule for a number of reasons. The only negative is that it won't count as a Junior Race as it conflicts with the Michigan High School Championships.
WinterSonnenwende is moving from this weekend (Dec 17) to February 18th, 2012 because of lack of snow.
With the impending weather forecast of minimal snow, the viability of pulling off the WinterSonnenwende next weekend (December 17) decreases daily. I am hopeful, but also realistic.
The event will feature men’s & women’s 17 km Freestyle, which is a Michigan Cup points race. There is also a 7.5 km Classic race open to everyone, and a kids race.

If you raced in the Nordic Fest Season Opener and are a member of a Michigan Cup team, you are now in first place in the individual standings. The VASA Ski Club leads the team standings.
The narrow 100 meter course was tricky. There were tight fast corners, undulations, and, if you weren't centered in the lane, grass just off the edge ready to catch a ski tip. But it was snow, in October!

UPDATED: The Michigan Cup Cross Country Ski Racing Series features 24 races this year, including the first race of the season in the entire USA.
Brick Wheels in Traverse City, Michigan will host the first cross country ski race of the 2011-2012 season in the entire USA on Saturday, October 22. The race will run on a short loop, snow courtesy of Zambonis from local ice rinks.
So where's the Michigan Cup schedule? Alas, Christmas, New Years, the US Senior National Championships and a host of other issues have caused scheduling conflicts that have kept the Michigan Cup calendar in flux.
February 10-12, 2012 skiers of all abilities from throughout North America will enjoy three days of fantastic National Masters ski races, and fun social events as the National Masters visits the lower peninsula of Michigan for the first time.
