Downhill in cross country skiing

7/2/2013 - By Swedish Winter Sports Research Centre

Downhill skiing is thrilling challenges in high speed that doesn't cost that much energy and gives you a great feeling for the snow, but still a lot of skiers are afraid of the technique and very few are actually focusing on it.

LATEST TRAIL CONDITIONS

SUN, JAN 20

Huron Meadows Metropark: 2:00pm. Did a loop of Buck's Run (excellent tracks - best of the season) to warm up, then skied the north golf course loop for a change of scenery (groomed, not tracked, wind-blown - use your B skis), then finished with a couple more loops around Buck's Run.

Skate lane on Buck's Run looked excellent. Hard pack, not wind blown. South golf course packed, no tracks, wind-blown (use B skis).

Parking lot is jammin'

Huron Meadows Metropark: Noon. Just arrived. Buck's Run is groomed, with Skate and Classic tracks.the entire golf course is groomed for skating, but wind blown now. Parking lot is getting full as the weather final gets near double-digits.

Crystal Mountain: I groomed the skating lanes yesterday. According to reports from the many skiers we had, the trails were great. We got a dusting of snow over night so if you can brave the cold come on out.

Hanson Hills: CLOSED TODAY: 1/20/2019 Please read below

Due to the extreme cold weather and high exposure time to frostbite and hypothermia, we will be Closed for all Downhill, Tubing, Snowsports school, and Cross Country/Fat bike Operations.

Thank you for your understanding as we make every effort to keep our Staff and Visitors safe.

All Tubing reservations and private snow sports school reservations will be refunded.

Forbush Corner: The entire trail system has been groomed over the past couple of days and the classic tracks and skate lane remain in great condition. Bundle up and head out to The Corner !!!

Cross Country Ski Headquarters: It was a beautiful, sunny day on the ski trails yesterday, and it was so great to see so many people enjoying the ski conditions, which range from good to excellent on all trails except Tall Pines. Groomer Mike snow combed the skating lanes last night, and tracks on the Trappers Cabin are still in excellent shape. The best conditions are on the Rolling Hills, Trappers Cabin, Wild Turkey and Manitou trails. Barring some pesky oak leaves, conditions are overall very good for skating and good for classic, with some truly excellent stretches out there. While temps will be cold today, the sun will make it feel much warmer!

Today's Stone Turtle Cafe lunch special is the Gourmet Mac 'n Cheese Bar! Feast on our deluxe, cheesy, homemade mac ‘n cheese, and choose from a variety of toppings to create your own mac-sterpiece. A true treat on a cold winter's day! Keep moving and you'll keep warm!

SAT, JAN 19

Huron Meadows Metropark: Speed increased on Bucks Run as darkness set in. Wonderful skating.
My yellow Patagonia jacket was missing from the picnic table halfway through my ski, about 5 pm. If found, please turn it in to ski rental. Thank you.

Forbush Corner: Excellent conditions! We skied from Forbush through Back 40 and to Hartwick Pines visitor center the back via Pines and Back 40 again. Outstanding!

Huron Meadows Metropark: Skied around 3:00 today. Slow going in skate lane with all the new snow on top. Classic looked better.
Should be better tomorrow and Monday.

Huron Meadows Metropark: Arrived at Huron Meadows around 9:30 this morning. Groomed Buck's Run, with about 2 inches of fresh snow on top made for nice skating. Lots of classic skiers and the classic tracks were in fabulous shape, and faster than the skating!

Around noon, I noticed that the main trail system was being groomed. I'm guessing the skating will be pretty good tomorrow, but probably not enough snow to set tracks.

By the way, Toko LF Yellow is the wrong skate glide wax for 20 degrees and fresh snow - I had great kick when I tried to stride in the classic tracks!

Nubs Nob: Conditions on the upper trails are excellent. Upper trails were power-tilled this morning.
Lower trails are still in very good condition, but not enough snow to power-till.

Noquemanon Trail-Forestville: Classic skied from 510 down to 17k and back up. Trail was bombi groomed. They even groomed the new Mead Hills Bypass. The new section is pretty incredible! They added some tough, steep climbs. The final downhill is like a roller coaster, very fun and technical. All of the 24k racers will be skiing this new section! 4 degrees out and an inch of lake effect snow in the tracks made for slow skiing. Race day in a week!

Stokely Creek: What can I say but it is a beautiful day. We might have a cold snap but it is winter right? Our guest are not inside by the fire but out on the trails. Face masks and warm outfits are what it takes. Two guests from New York City are hitting the trails today and taking lessons this afternoon. If they can handle it everyone can. Trails are in perfect shape. And Norm's is open with tea and cookies this weekend.

Cross Country Ski Headquarters: After some fresh snow in the past couple days, plus tremendous snow spreading and doctoring efforts by Mike and Tony, conditions range from good to excellent on all trails except Tall Pines. Groomer Mike will snow comb the skating lanes this morning, and fresh tracks were set on the Trappers Cabin trail yesterday. The best conditions are on the Rolling Hills, Trappers Cabin, Wild Turkey and Manitou trails. The worst of the hard-packed spots have been patched up, so aside from bits of oak leaves, conditions are overall very good for skating and good for classic!

Today's Stone Turtle Cafe Lunch Special is the Gourmet Mac 'n Cheese bar!! Choose from a variety of toppings to create your own mac-sterpiece. Plus, stop by and demo the brand new 2020 Fischer 3D Speedmax Skate skis, with gliding sidewalls! Good luck to all Cote Dame racers today!
