The Dune's Golf
Course is near Empire, Mi. It's the desperation course for me when there isn't enough
snow to go out on the normal areas around here. Quite a few skiers use this area
throughout the winter. It has 18 fairways with nice rolling terrain. The grass they have
planted there allows the snow to sit on top and it lasts pretty long even when it gets
over 32f. We have been bugging the owner to groom a loop trail with no luck...so far.

Addison Oaks is
another Oakland County park north of Rochester that usually is groomed for both skating
and classic. Last year (2001-2002) they didn't groom at all. I think because of lack of
snow but it might have been budgetary. Addison has a great trail network, quite a bit of
single track in the woods and a lot along open farm fields but in the shadow of tree
lines to preserve snow. It's the same course they run Mt. Bike races on in the spring
and fall (race coming up Sept. 15, 2002) I'll find out what the situation with grooming
is there and let you know what they'll have this year. (By Michael Bliss)

One of the Midland
County Parks, Pine Haven is located in the woods along US10 near Sanford. Take the
West River Road exit from US10 and follow the signs to the park. Trails (about
15K) are sometimes groomed (more reliably for classic). The upper-level beginner's loop
is very flat, while several intermediate and advanced loops descend from the plateau to
two small streams. No rentals or food, but there is a porta-john and often a ski
patrol on weekends. No lighted trails. |

There are two
artificially lighted cross country ski trails with lengths of 2.5 kilometers and 5.0
kilometers respectively; a 3.5 kilometer expert trail; and, a 4.0 kilometer
"natural classical" only trail.Trails are groomed daily for both classical and
skate skiing.
The trail winds through dense forests dominated by
white pines which have often referred to as the "enchanted forest" after a
snowfall. The "quiet" skier often encounters local wildlife, such as whitetail
deer, ruffled grouse, squirrel, or the growing population of wild turkey. |

Warming hut and old classic rentals. Vending machines. Closes at dark. $5.00/day pass
