Dave Fanslow set a new course record of 35:54 to win the third and final race of the 1st Annual Team NordicSkiRacer.Com Fall Duathlon Series. Dave had both the fastest running and rollerski splits in the Duathlon. Doug Heady came in second, with Mike Muha third. Mike Hedinger, who raced the rollerski-only division last month, decided to do the entire event and surprised himself with a strong finish, just seconds out of third place (Table 1). (We got Mike to join Team NordicSkiRacer.com after the race!) Doug Heady wins the overall "Most Improved Award" for the greatest decrease in race time between any two races. Doug's best was an improvement of 22 seconds between his first and second races (Table 2). This is even more impressive in that no other duathlete could improve their time between races! Doug's improved conditioning allowed him to overcome the slower conditions and slower rollerskis caused by colder weather.
The Race As in the last two races, Mike Muha lead the race from the start. Dave Fanslow passed Mike in the last kilometer and quickly built up a lead of 38 seconds into the transition area. Doug Heady was a mere 40 seconds behind Muha, with Mike Heidinger 10 seconds behind Doug. As always, Doug had the fastest transition time - 1:33 - but not by much. Mike Heidinger transition was only 7 seconds slower. Dave Fanslow left the transition area in 1:46, with Mike Muha having the longest transition of 1:59 Mike Muha again skied the rollerski segment with the classic style while everyone else skated. Dave Fanslow killed everyone with a 14:08 split, followed by Doug at 15:28, Muha at 17:06, and Heidinger at 17:09. Rollerski-Only Division Jeff Ray again set a blistering pace, finishing the rollerski in 13:12, a second faster than his November race time. Will McLaughlin finished second, taking four seconds off his November time. Weather was fabulous! Sunny, no wind, temperatures below freezing. Thanks again to Race Director Dan Motowski for organizing this great series of duathlons! Table 1. Race Results
