Glen Lake's Cassidy Edwards won the Junior Olympics Cross
Country Skiing 2003 National Championships classic race on Wednesday, as part of the event being
held March 10-15 in Fairbanks, Alaska. The Great Lakes District was represented by 4 girls from
Traverse City and 3 from the Upper Peninsula, along with 4 boys from Traverse City, one from
Boyne, and 4 from Upper Peninsula high school teams. The Traverse City team had just won
their second consecutive state high school championship in mid-February, beating out teams from
Copper Country, Marquette, and Roscommon.
At Wednesday's freestyle XC ski races, Traverse City's Coulter
twin sisters placed second and third in the 10km race, Anna in 32:10 and Julia 32:13, followed
by a sixth place finish for Glen Lakes Cassidy Edwards in 32:42. Traverse City's Laura Meeker
came in 17th in the girls 5km race in 17:15. For Traverse City's boys 17-18 yrs old, Cameron
Ross placed 39th in 46:16, Chris Scott 50th in 47:20, and Bill Bradley 73rd in 57:36 in the 15km
race. Boyne's Brad Winkler came in 41st in 48:43 and TC's Jon Ault 48th in 51:00 in the
19-20 yrs old 15 km race.

Cassidy Edwards came back on Friday to win the classic XC ski
race at the Junior Olympics National Championships in 17:04 for the 5km race for 17-18 yr olds.
Anna Coulter took 14th in 18:17 and Julia Coulter 17th in 18:25. Laura Meeker placed 20th for
15-16 yrs old in 19:09. In the boys 10km classic race, Cameron Ross took 9th in 29:54, Chris
Scott 41st in 31:57, and Bill Bradley 73rd in 37:08 for 17-18 yrs old. TC's Jon Ault beat
out Boyne's Brad Winkler in the 19-20 yr olds race, 45th in 34:26 to 47th in 35:29.
Saturday's races were team relays, with one skier racing
classic technique, followed by two freestyle legs. Glen Lake's Cassidy Edwards and Anna &
Julia Coulter put together a winning relay team but got beat in their 3 x 5km race by only
1/100th of a second by an Alaska girls team, which resulted in an exciting 2nd place finish in
48:07:3. Laura Meeker was part of the 8th place team in her 3 x 3km relay with 2 U.P. girls in
32:48. Cameron Ross and Chris Scott teamed up with a 17-18 yr old UPer for a 17th place finish
in 45:17 in their 3 x 5km race, while Jon Ault and Bill Bradley teamed up with Boyne's Brad
Winkler in the 19-20 yrs olds race for 19th in 47:46.
