Young Skiers Brave Cold at Junior Bear Chase
March 8, 2003

CALUMET--More than 90 young skiers braved 20-below wind chills at the Swedetown Cross-Country Ski Trails Saturday, proving that "cold" is just a state of mind. Youngsters from Marquette to Minneapolis and Madison to Mandan competed in classic and freestyle races at the annual Junior Bear Chase in Calumet.

Many of the skiers competed in both races and all of the winners in the combined events are members of the Copper Country Ski Tigers.

Winners in the boys age groups were Al Toczydlowski of Calumet, Jay Woodbeck of Hancock, and Keith Helminen of Laurium.

Girls combined winners included Louise Oppliger of Hancock, Madelyn Shoup of Houghton, Lieschen Klemp of Laurium, and Amber Young of Hancock.

Other individual race winners were Ellen Twardzik, Mike Wiitala, Isabel Sharp, and Andrew Torresani.

The event attracted skiers ranging in age from four to 16. The Junior Bear Chase is sponsored by the Copper Country Ski Tigers, an organization that teaches cross-country skiing to area youth.
