What:

Superiorland Ski Club and Ishpeming Ski Club will be co-hosting the 2024 Michigan Nordic Skiing State Championship for high school skiers at Al Quaal recreation area and the UP Nordic Complex the weekend of February 9 – 11, 2024.

Friday and Saturday’s races will be at Al Quaal and competition will move to the UP Nordic Complex on Sunday morning. The awards ceremony will take place at the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame in Ishpeming after Sunday morning’s races.

The competition opens Friday afternoon with the Freestyle (skating) 1 km sprint races. A qualifying heat will be followed by 3 elimination heats to determine a winner.

Saturday morning will begin with the first half of the Pursuit race – a 5k Classic (diagonal stride) race – which will determine the start order of the 5k Freestyle race in the afternoon. The pursuit format means that racers line up for the second race in the order of their finishes in the first race. If you pass another racer in the second race you are closer to an overall first place and if you are passed your overall standing falls. Middle school skiers will compete in a 3 km classic race midday, between the morning and afternoon pursuit races.

Sunday morning ski events at the UP Nordic Complex will be followed by a brunch & awards at the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame and Museum.

The Ishpeming Ski Club and Superiorland Ski Club are working together to provide the groomed courses, warming and waxing facilities, race officials and timers, awards and warm drinks. We are actively seeking sponsors to defray the expenses of the race. Click here if you are interested in helping out with cash or in-kind donations!
